stillness and moving images

This was the first method I used to develop choreography. It was inspired by Remy Charlip and Eadweard Muybridge.

I was particularly interested in the still image at the beginning. I had wanted to create a framework that would allow me to make choreography by stitching together "movement stills" as I called them in rehearsal.

To create phrases that moved through these stills, El, Audrey, and I each took turns improvising while the other two watched. The two who were not dancing "tuned" the improvisation, asking the dancer to stop at a particularly striking moment in the dance. While the dancer paused, we took a photo of the moment. We did this several times for each dancer.

We then used the movement stills in these photos to create scores. We moved from image to image, alternating stills from each dancer, and connected each shape with transitional movement.
